Chapter 18

Maisie

I stayed with Wesley all night, but snuck out before dawn to return to my cottage. He didn’t need to tell me that he hadn’t been successful in convincing most of the women that my intentions were going to have good long-term effects on them. I could smell the animus in the air all day the next day when I went to get supplies from the kitchen.

Whatever discussion that Wesley had with them, it had stopped them from approaching me directly, but that didn’t stop the whispers and stares.

They’re always going to see me as their enemy.

I tried to remind myself that no one had ever seen any movement as good at first, not without realizing they were being oppressed. Wesley’s women had it better than most, but that didn’t mean I was going to stop fighting for those who needed it.

It was easy for me to see how much better they could have it if they just fought a bit, to live their own lives, to come and go as they pleased and follow their own passions without having to abide by the whims of males. But Wesley hadn’t been a bad master in the grand scheme of things. They didn’t see him as a captor, and I didn’t want to portray him as one. In fact, the thought of him being with any of them now made my stomach churn.

Which was one more reason that I decided to keep to myself in the cottage unless Wesley sent for me, which he did that very night when everyone else was tucked away, and I told him my concerns.

“Are you ever going to convince your harem that they’re better off free?” I asked tentatively. “Or do you think you’re just abandoning them?”

He sprawled beside me on his oversized bed and ran his fingers over my face. “You need to give this time, Maisie. You’re too impatient for overnight change, and that was never going to happen.”

My eyes narrowed slightly, a trickle of doubt sliding down my spine. “Have you told them that you’re setting them free?”

He sighed and flopped onto his back. “They have always been free to go, but can we not discuss this tonight? I’ve been up to my eyeballs in preparations for court tomorrow as it is, and my head is spinning. I was just hoping to have a quiet evening with you to unwind and forget about all that messiness.”

I bit on my lower lip, a dozen more questions vying for the surface, but I swallowed them, not wanting to press him. He seemed tired, as if the events of the past few days had truly drained him, and I knew that I had turned his life upside down.

Curling into him, I extended my arms toward him, bringing his naked chest closer to mine. “We can put a cap in it for tonight,” I agreed, kissing the top of his head. “But we’re still going ahead with the plans, aren’t we?”

“Yes, Maisie.” He sounded vaguely annoyed, and I vowed to drop it.
